It was quite a season for the Natick High School Varsity Baseball Team. Expected to finish the season with a .500 record by Coach John Carroll, the Redmen compiled an impressive 18-2 standing. Led by senior Co-captains Ray "Hoover" Bolton and Dough Wright, Natick stood alone in second place behind powerful Braintree.
Natick's success seemed to lie in it's offense. Senior Robert Bolton and Doug Wright, and juniors Alvin Taylor and Jim DePalo were at there peak, sluggin timely base hits to drive in the bulk of Redmen runs. Heads-up baserunning by Taylor and senior Tim Haswell kept the opposing field busy.
The Redmen defense had its share of the limelight. Outfielder Gary Nelson's apparent glove snagged a few would-be doubles, while catcher DePalo consistently put the enemy base-stealers back on the bench. Pitchers George Bradley and Chris O'Connell shared the duties with Ghilani and Hutchinson.
The season came to a dramatic end with the redmen winning the South Section of the Division 1 State Tournament. They defeated Barnstable 3-1, B.C. High 7-4, and Ranolph 15-2 to earn the recognition of having the best record in the state of 21 wins - losses.
Third place in the New England Hockey Championship.
